Creator Q&A

Tell us about yourself

I’m a professional violinist living in Hastings. I was born into a musical family in Glasgow. I studied with top-class teachers in Manchester, London and Bern and have since carved out an eclectic career as a musician and workshop leader.

As well as performing live all around the world, I have been recording for many years - on my own, in ensembles, orchestras and bands, and in studios ranging from my own basement, right through to Abbey Road. This however, is the first solo recording project which I have curated and released! It was a great chance to bring all of my skills together; violin, singing, baroque and folk music, performing in different languages, poetry and composition.

What inspired you to make this title(s)?

My Mum had always wanted to make a beautiful album of lullabies, and so we made a pact to do it together. We thought it would be special to glide from one language to another, bringing together lullabies from around the world including Switzerland, where my Mum is from. We collected our favourite melodies then improvised to make our arrangements on violin, viola, lute and bass, together with some wonderful musicians based in Sweden.

I love exploring sound - whether it’s creating collages in sound design, discovering international folk traditions or developing extended techniques on gut strings. This album has grown out of these experiments and captures how people have soothed each other to sleep across the centuries. The idea of “noodling around” is where our name, Noodle Music comes from…

"We believe lullabies aren’t just for babies, but can provide a special bedtime routine for anyone wanting to wind down"

Who do you imagine listening to your audio?

We really wanted to create a magical sound world which would appeal to all the family. It felt important to make something which was not only calming but provided some real hope through challenging times, with enough darkness as well as sweetness in the mix. We believe lullabies aren’t just for babies, but can provide a special bedtime routine for anyone wanting to wind down.

Is there anything different about making audio for Yoto?

In a world run on screens, I believe Yoto is a welcome breath of fresh air and I am excited to collaborate with them through my music. I love the way the cards give children the autonomy that I enjoyed as a child with cassettes and CDs. My niece has a Yoto player and I love tuning in with her before bedtime.

I really wanted to create a Yoto card that children would want to come back to over and over again, that would fill their imaginations with unique, night-time scenes and provide interesting music and spoken word for relaxation, whilst giving a flavour of some different languages. We’re thrilled that children’s book illustrator/writer Ed Boxall came on board to design the beautiful artwork.

We really hope you enjoy the whole experience!

What’s next?

Noodle Music are planning to perform the lullabies live in the UK in 2025. We’re also starting on ‘Dances From Around the World’!
