Meet The Musician: Interview with Divinity Roxx

Welcome to #MeetTheMusician!

We’re big fans of music around here, in all its forms. From the upbeat and playful to the sleepy and gentle, there’s a tune for every family with Yoto - and what better way to celebrate the joy of music than to meet the awesome artists behind some of your favourite Yoto tracks? This month, we sat down with Divinity Roxx, Grammy-nominated artist and creator of Ready Set Go!.

About Divinity: Divinity Roxx is an American recording artist, composer, and musician. In addition to her own work, she is well known for touring and performing with Beyoncé Knowles (2006–2011) as her bassist and Musical Director.

Q: Share a memory of music in your childhood - why is it special to you?
A: One of my favorite childhood memories that includes music is of me, my mom, and my little sister and brother in the living room of my childhood home dancing, jumping around singing at the top of our lungs to my mom’s favorite songs. My mom loved music and she passed that love on to me.

Q: Why do you love making music?
A: I love making music because making music makes me happy, and who doesn’t want to be happy?

Q: What was it like being *drumroll please* the bass player for Beyoncé?
A: It was pretty incredible being the bass player for Beyoncé. I was able to travel all over the world playing music with one of the most successful and hard-working women in the music business. Great times indeed!

Q: What was your inspiration behind Ready Set Go?
A: My main inspiration behind the album Ready Set Go! was to have fun writing and playing songs for kids. I had never made a kid's album and I wanted to write fun music that was filled with positive affirming messages.

Q: If you were a musical instrument what would you be and why?
A: If I were a musical instrument I’d be a harmonica because anybody can learn to play and you could put me in your pocket and take me everywhere.

Q: Where is your favourite place to dance?
A: I love a good dance at home in the living room and sometimes even in the kitchen. I don’t know what it is about putting on some music and dancing at home but I think it has something to do with being so comfortable, I can dance like nobody’s watching.

Q: What’s your favourite sound and why?
A: My favorite sound is laughter because it’s contagious and instantly lifts your mood.

You can follow along Divinity on all her musical adventures on Instagram or her website. Stay tuned as we feature more artists as a part our monthly #MeetTheMusician series.
